Sys-Con, Andy Oliver, Me... enough

posted Sunday, 15 May 2005
Andy Oliver has written an article on journalistic ethics, with his standard barb at JDJ because they posted a competitor's ad and ignored his POI article. Enough, Andy.

It's gotten old. There's no point in continuing to hold a grudge for me because of it.

The article you're talking about, for one thing, preceded my tenure at JDJ. I never had anything to do with it. I didn't "apologize" because it wasn't my responsibility. I tried to tell you that. I also explained it from Sys-Con's viewpoint, which should have been pretty clear.

Even at that, Sys-Con doesn't "owe" you fair time. You wrote a POI article that the responsible editor (not me, BTW) rejected. I won't say why because I don't know why. If you have a problem with that, take it up with him, not me. Your personal issues with me are acceptable; however, stop assigning every evil done to you by Sys-Con to me, because I didn't have anything to do with it.

For the record, I don't consider advertisers when news is posted.

At JDJ, advertisers were actively discouraged from writing articles. (Distinct pro-open-source bias, note. We rejected articles that were tied to specific technology.)

At TSS, we also don't consider advertisers when we post content. Ever. Institutionally. The bar for a commercial product is higher than for a free product, in fact, because commercial products are harder to communicate value with. ("Here's a download!" is a better value than "It's for sale.")

My... uh, "rant-story," by the way, didn't include any rants. I was being very careful to represent things factually, including my own resignation over a similar issue with Sys-Con. If I'd not added that disclosure, it would have... v iolated journalistic ethics, because I'd have not disclosed my own relationship and history with one of the entities involved. If you think that's ranting, I suggest you go look up the word.

No ethics, Andy? Well, the mirror's there. I can look into it.

You just posted this because you are jealous of JBoss' success. Everyone keeps attacking us JBoss employees and we've done no wrong ever. If you find something that looks like we've done wrong, we'll find a way to wiggle out of it. We are the smartest developers around and everyone is out to get us.
