JRun Beta Program and what's wrong with it

Monday, 1 May 2006 7:49 A GMT-04
Adobe is running a new beta program for JRun. That's newsworthy, right? So why didn't I publish it on TheServerSide? I wanted to, honest... but I couldn't, not without providing a disservice to the readers.

Bush needs to go. Now.

Monday, 1 May 2006 7:26 A GMT-04
I'm normally one who sees the term limits for Presidents as a good thing - because it means that regardless of how crappy a President is, he'll be out of office soon enough anyway. But I'm wrong. Bush has to go. NOW.

My Personality Profile

Sunday, 30 April 2006 8:57 A GMT-04
Check out my personality profile! Of course, for all this, I do disagree with certain aspects... I'm an INTJ, according to Jungian thought (and most tests, although I also occasionally score out as INTP) and the biggest disagreement I have is that

Sun's future

Wednesday, 26 April 2006 7:23 A GMT-04
I like Sun, I like Scott, I like Jonathan... I'm just a liker, not an arguer, I guess. But I see Jonathan's promotion to CEO as good primarily because I think it makes transition to the man who will save Sun easier.

The TSS April Fools' Joke

Friday, 7 April 2006 9:33 A GMT-04
This was originally going to be 2007's April Fool's joke, but let's be real: my memory doesn't last that long.

DHCP, I dislike thee, or maybe it's my Linksys router

Tuesday, 14 March 2006 12:03 P GMT-04
I'm annoyed by Solaris 9 + my linksys wireless router. I can't figure out how to get my solaris 9 machine to get and use a static IP!

Three years too many, yes, but the eggs are still broken

Tuesday, 14 March 2006 10:09 A GMT-04
Matt Luce, in "Three years too many," has a point when he says we've been in Iraq for too long (pointing to the beginning of the invasion.) He's going to attend rallies for peace. Good idea, but we're already in it; can't back out now.

I figured out what framework authors are doing wrong.

Thursday, 9 March 2006 12:11 P GMT-04
I've been struggling to work out how to explain to various framework authors and supporters why I think what they are telling people is not right, or why the frameworks are flawed, with very limited success. But I think I know the secret now.

My midlife crisis shows up and I waste it on appliances.

Thursday, 9 March 2006 7:54 A GMT-04
This is my life in a nutshell: wasted opportunities. I woke up this morning, started making my coffee (hard work, mostly consisting of turning on the coffee pot thingy), and... started admiring the mixer my wife and I bought last night.

EJB3 timer feature still not... quite... complete, IMO

Wednesday, 8 March 2006 4:23 P GMT-04
I have a project where I need to do something constantly, roughly every minute. There are a lot of ways for me to do this with external libraries, but I want the EJB3 spec to enable me to initialize timers without involving application code.

More Netbeans 5.5 preview follies

Wednesday, 8 March 2006 8:41 A GMT-04
I've been playing with the Netbeans 5.5 preview; here are more little, uh, things I've noticed about it so far.

If I was a troll....

Wednesday, 8 March 2006 8:18 A GMT-04
You know, if I was a troll (no comment, and shame on you for thinking it!) I think the last thing I'd do is hang out under a bridge with the sole purpose of preventing people from crossing over...

Dana Reeve is dead of lung cancer at 45.

Tuesday, 7 March 2006 9:57 A GMT-04
Dana Reeve is dead of lung cancer at 45. This is very saddening, for a lot of reasons: she was still young, there's no cure for lung cancer, she had a 13-year-old son who's now an orphan... rest in peace, and we'll continue the search for a cure.

The Tesla Testament

Monday, 6 March 2006 8:34 A GMT-04
CIMEntertainment offered me the privilege of reading a draft of "The Tesla Testament" last week. He's been dribbling hints about it to me for a while, even letting me read the first chapter a while back, so I had to take the opportunity.

I'm moving to Opera.

Friday, 3 March 2006 9:56 A GMT-04
Firefox is simply not working well enough, consistently enough, for me to stay with it. I can't stand IE, so Opera wins... as long as it works better than Firefox.

Darts and Arrows with NetBeans 5.5

Monday, 27 February 2006 10:07 A GMT-04
I routinely play with nearly every IDE out there because I have to keep up with the various features of each for comparison points, and here're my first thoughts on NetBeans 5.5.

My Son, the Programmer

Monday, 27 February 2006 8:29 A GMT-04
My son is doomed to a life in software engineering - he already has mangling requirements down pat.

My Speech Synthesizer Hardware Project

Monday, 27 February 2006 8:07 A GMT-04
My oldest son is into hardware, in a big way. Me, I hate hardware. The reason? My speech synthesizer project, back in 1984 or so, courtesy of Ahoy! magazine... and here's the story.

Four months to design a data model...?

Friday, 24 February 2006 12:40 P GMT-04
Bruce Tate said it took him four months to design a data model. That doesn't make sense - while I don't know what his data model looks like, I just modeled a complete structure for myself in about an hour, including the time it took to learn EJB3.

Dear Elena

Friday, 24 February 2006 9:41 A GMT-04
I just got done reading "Dear Elena..." and I cannot imagine how horrible it must be.

Oracle buying JBoss? Non, mon frere.

Friday, 27 January 2006 1:09 P GMT-04
Sys-Con is telling people through its newsletter that Oracle might be considering buying JBoss. I think that's irresponsible, in a lot of ways - the article is written as if it *might* be true, but it simply isn't true. Period.

"Word up!"

Wednesday, 23 November 2005 8:47 A GMT-04
"Word Up!" What a horrible song. Am I the only person in the world who thinks that there's not really a way to wave your hands in the air like you do care?

You know something I hate? I'll tell you.

Wednesday, 26 October 2005 8:06 A GMT-04
I really hate the fact that - with one exception - I'll have looked forward to when each and every American President I've seen is out of office. I've supported Bush grudgingly, just like I supported Clinton grudgingly, and the previous Bush, and.

I'm finally at home again.

Thursday, 20 October 2005 8:46 A GMT-04
Whew! The not-being-home part of my longest vacation ever (except my honeymoon) is over, and lots has happened. Hospital visits, falls, caves, Java in Action, and... no work.

Say what?

"Theater piracy law snags first victim" -- this sounds like the law is victimizing criminals. Um, sorry, folks - the guy carrying a camcorder into the theater to copy the film is doing something against the law, whether you agree with it or not.
