Don't know if this will work or not. :)

posted Friday, 5 March 2004
This is a cheap, bald play for money. If you're going to get offended by this, don't read it, eh? (Also, chances are you'll take it as seriously as I do: i.e., not at all.)

Here's the thing. I want money for the sole purpose of getting some sound equipment: a new bass (the fretless wore me down for the style that I play) , an A/D converter on a decent sound card for recording into a computer... maybe even a mic (and/or mic preamp) to replace the leaden Shure SM-58 I have. In a golden, perfect world, a drum kit plus mics for it.

See, here's the thing: I believe I can do everything myself. Even sing, if I'm really careful about how I do it and what range I write for. I can play the guitar and bass; I can fake my way through any keyboard-related stuff I need to (and compose the rest via MIDI), and I started my musical career as a drummer. On drums, I gots no chops any more. I've checked out kits at various shops, and I know I can't play well any more - tempo's off, and they just don't flow, you know? But I can feel it - and I can tell you that it wouldn't take that much work - maybe a few hours worth of just bashing away - before it starts to come back to me, like riding a bike or something.

But I can't afford this stuff. I'm not broke by any means, and if it came right down to it, I can afford it, but for me to pay for it means shortchanging my family's goals... and they're more important than the music is. By a long shot. I'm not going to jam them, even short-term, for goals that are, in the end, intensely personal and no more.

So here's your shot! Don't you have maybe $4000 to $5000 lying about to throw away at a musician who's mostly washed up? If you do, let me know. And if you don't - hey, all's cool. I'll eventually get around to the bass, and I do have a way of recording, even if it kinda sucks, and I'll just work it out. I don't make money from my music because when it comes right down to it, I'm doing it for the music's sake, and everyone's welcome to enjoy it.

Added later... Now, let's be clear on one thing: this isn't really much of a joke - I'd really love to get some money from people with no strings attached. But if you're for some strange reason actually considering this, please don't do anything like this in preference to doing something really useful, like donating to a cancer research fund or the homeless or the hungry or something. Really. If you're not floating about in a river of spare change wondering HOW in the WORLD you can EVER spend it all, THIS BLOG IS A JOKE. (If you are floating in a river of money, NOW you're reading the right blog.) I'd hate to think that ANYONE chose to even THINK about sending me money in place of an actual worthy cause.

Peace, out.
